Cristiano Ronaldo: Love Him or Hate Him – this Guy can Play Soccer

In Favorite Soccer Players on February 4, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Just about everyone who knows me understands that my favorite Premier League team is Manchester United.

One of the best players on the team is a 24 year-old winger named Cristiano Ronaldo. They signed him for $19 million when he was only 18 years old.

This year FIFA named him the World Player of the Year. Cristiano has amazing skills – but the guy really has a major attitude. Let me just say that you wouldn’t want to referee one of his games.

Even with his attitude, I still like to watch him play and I’m always watching videos where I can learn some of his moves.

Here is a new video that will show you what makes him such a great player. Note: You might want to click on the title of this article – just so you can see the video within a larger window.

Did I Mention I Saw Freddy Adu, During Spring Break?

In Favorite Soccer Players, Favorite Soccer Teams on March 23, 2008 at 9:27 pm

During Spring Break, I watched 8 hours of professional soccer – against four International teams – and NO, I wasn’t on the couch with a remote in my hand.

Nope. I was at the 2008 CONCACAF Championship, held at Nashville’s LP Field. This is the tournament where they decide which two teams get to compete at the Beijing Summer Olympics. And I was so close to the action that I could have hit Freddy Adu in the head with a Skittle!

But I wasn’t the only one there, there were 13,000 other maniac soccer fans from Honduras, Guatemala, Canada and the U.S. Oh yeah, there was my Mom, too. She isn’t a maniac, yet, but I think I’m sending her in that direction. Wish me luck!

The games were so cool I can’t even explain it. There were people from all these countries – all cheering for their own teams. It was like something you see on TV – except it’s right in front of you. Flags from other countries. Cheers and songs in different languages. Drums beating and painted faces. It was really fun to watch.

So what’s CONCACAF? Well, it stands for The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football.

Short story: It’s about 40 countries, in North and Central America – even including a bunch of those tiny “island countries” in the Caribbean. All these countries do battle – to see which two get to go to the Olympics. And, no, Jack Sparrow was not on one of the Caribbean teams. Aaaargh.

THE BEST NEWS: USA was one of the two winners – selected to go to the Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing in 2008!!!

Tennessee Titans Football (and Soccer) Player – Rob Bironas

In Favorite Soccer Players on September 8, 2007 at 9:06 pm

You may not know it, football fans, but you can thank a ton of former soccer players for winning a lot of NFL football games. In fact, Rob Bironas, the kicker for my favorite NFL team – the Tennessee Titans – played soccer in high school for four years.

In the photo, below, Bironas is celebrating after kicking a 49-yard field goal that goes through the uprights with 11 seconds left in the fourth quarter to beat the New York Giants, 24-21, in a home game on Nov. 26, 2006.
